We’re thrilled to share some exciting news: Mark Sommerfeld, our Managing Partner at RYMARK IT Navigation, was recently featured on CBS Minnesota (WCCO) in a segment that dives into one of today’s biggest cybersecurity headaches: remembering and securing passwords.
The CBS feature highlights a challenge many of us face daily: juggling endless logins across email, banking, streaming, and business apps. Forgetting a new password, resetting it, and then forgetting the reset one starts a frustrating cycle that often leads people to risky shortcuts like reusing the same two or three weak passwords.
Mark explained that this is exactly what makes individuals and organizations prime targets for cyberattacks.
During the interview, Mark laid out clear, practical steps anyone can follow:
Use a password manager. Tools like Bitwarden, Dashlane, or LastPass generate strong, unique passwords and encrypt them so you don’t have to remember dozens of logins.
Don’t rely on personal details. Using birthdays, pet names, or sports teams makes passwords easy to guess. Hackers often mine social media for this kind of information.
Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Adding a second lock, especially app-based MFA rather than text message codes, means that even if your password is compromised, attackers can’t get in.
The CBS story also emphasizes proven best practices: create passwords at least 12–15 characters long, mix in numbers and symbols, and never store them on sticky notes, in documents, or unencrypted files.
Weak or reused passwords remain one of the top ways cybercriminals break into companies. By building stronger password practices and adopting tools like password managers and MFA, businesses can significantly lower their risk of costly breaches.
